Salary: £43,015–£79,798 per annum (based on experience & family circumstances)
Contract: 3-year contract, renewable up to 9 years

Overview

We are seeking a proactive and creative User Experience (UX) Designer to join EMBL-EBI’s dynamic team. You will design intuitive, user-centric experiences for complex, data-heavy scientific applications that support global research communities.

What You’ll Do

  • Conduct user interviews, usability testing, and feedback sessions
  • Create personas, journey maps, and data-backed insights
  • Analyse user behaviour and identify improvements
  • Design wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity UI
  • Build accessible, WCAG-compliant experiences
  • Collaborate with developers, scientists, and project managers
  • Contribute to design system maintenance and evolution
  • Promote user-centred design across the organisation

Requirements

  • Proven UX design experience (scientific or data-intensive tools preferred)
  • Proficiency with Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, Axure, etc.
  • Strong user research and usability testing skills
  • Practical knowledge of WCAG accessibility standards
  • Experience with design systems and component libraries
  • Ability to simplify complex workflows and data-heavy interfaces
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Self-starter with ability to grasp scientific/technical concepts
  • Demonstrated interest in emerging UX tools and trends

Desirable

  • Degree in UX, HCI, Psychology, Computer Science, or related field
  • Familiarity with life sciences, genomics, or bioinformatics
  • Basic HTML/CSS knowledge
  • Experience with AI-driven design
  • Understanding of Agile or Lean UX practices
