Location: Hinxton, Cambridge, UK (Hybrid)
Salary: £43,015–£79,798 per annum (based on experience & family circumstances)
Contract: 3-year contract, renewable up to 9 years

Overview
We are seeking a proactive and creative User Experience (UX) Designer to join EMBL-EBI’s dynamic team. You will design intuitive, user-centric experiences for complex, data-heavy scientific applications that support global research communities.
What You’ll Do
- Conduct user interviews, usability testing, and feedback sessions
- Create personas, journey maps, and data-backed insights
- Analyse user behaviour and identify improvements
- Design wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity UI
- Build accessible, WCAG-compliant experiences
- Collaborate with developers, scientists, and project managers
- Contribute to design system maintenance and evolution
- Promote user-centred design across the organisation
Requirements
- Proven UX design experience (scientific or data-intensive tools preferred)
- Proficiency with Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, Axure, etc.
- Strong user research and usability testing skills
- Practical knowledge of WCAG accessibility standards
- Experience with design systems and component libraries
- Ability to simplify complex workflows and data-heavy interfaces
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Self-starter with ability to grasp scientific/technical concepts
- Demonstrated interest in emerging UX tools and trends
Desirable
- Degree in UX, HCI, Psychology, Computer Science, or related field
- Familiarity with life sciences, genomics, or bioinformatics
- Basic HTML/CSS knowledge
- Experience with AI-driven design
- Understanding of Agile or Lean UX practices
