Overview

The UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC), based at the historic Royal Observatory Edinburgh, is the national centre for designing and producing world-leading astronomical instruments and systems. As part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), the centre employs innovative technology across multiple engineering fields, including optics, cryogenics, control electronics, and software, collaborating globally with academic and industrial partners.

This exciting graduate opportunity will see you join the UKATC mechanical group, supporting both ground and space-based astronomy and earth observation projects.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conceptual and detail design of opto-mechanical systems and components.
  • CAD modelling, layouts, and manufacturing/assembly drawings.
  • Structural and thermal analysis using FEA and traditional methods.
  • Producing design documentation, reports, and specifications.
  • Participating in design reviews, vendor liaison, assembly/testing, and commissioning at overseas telescopes.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Minimum 2:1 degree (achieved or on track) in a relevant field.
  • Right to live and work in the UK.
  • Enthusiasm for astronomy, space science, or instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles (mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, design process).
  • Strong communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills.

Desirable:

  • Experience with CAD, FEA, Matlab, Python, or Product Data Management software.
