Overview

Join the Data Science function at NHS Derby, supporting the Digital Strategy through big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) initiatives. You’ll apply advanced statistical and AI methods across the four key levels of analytics—descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive—to provide data-driven insights that support decision-making in a busy Acute Trust environment. As a Senior Data Science Analyst, you will manage a small team, set development goals, and ensure the delivery of high-quality analytical outputs aligned with governance and project standards.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver accurate, timely, and value-added analysis to support a data-driven NHS Trust.
  • Develop both quantitative and qualitative indicators for clinical and corporate divisions.
  • Lead a designated analytics team, providing expert support for complex statistical modelling and data-driven decisions.
  • Formulate models and algorithms using tools such as SQL, R, Python, or similar.
  • Present insights and reports to stakeholders as the BI representative.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications (Essential)

  • Degree in a numerically based field (e.g., Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Econometrics).
  • Evidence of training in computer science, mathematics, and statistics.

Experience & Knowledge (Essential)

  • Strong experience in programming (SQL, R, Python, or similar).
  • Data extraction and manipulation skills across structured/unstructured and cloud/on-premise sources.
  • Proven record managing complex analytical projects.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with NHS datasets and reporting systems.
  • Experience in forecasting, capacity, and demand modelling.

Skills & Abilities (Essential)

  • Proficient in statistical methods and project management.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Innovative and proactive problem-solving mindset.

Desirable

  • Experience applying statistical modelling to healthcare data.
  • Proficiency with statistical software packages.
