Description
The Applications team within ITS operates a substantial platform of around 100 Kubernetes clusters, combining a large on-premises VMware estate with a growing presence in the public cloud.
As Hybrid Cloud Manager (Cloud Engineer), you will:
- Lead a sub-team of 3 DevOps engineers modernising deployment processes.
- Oversee public cloud estate administration, ensuring FinOps processes for cost tracking, forecasting, and governance.
- Balance on-prem and cloud resources while supporting EMBL’s mission of Training.
- Partner with the Training team to uphold quality of course delivery and provide cloud training.
Key Responsibilities
Management & Leadership
- Deliver strategic initiatives with engineering.
- Lead and mentor a team of 3 DevOps engineers.
- Contribute to roadmap design.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build strong relationships across EMBL-EBI.
- Translate requirements and manage expectations.
Technical Excellence
- Develop reusable architecture blueprints.
- Design and evolve scalable self-service platforms.
- Drive a cost-awareness culture through FinOps.
Project Management
- Track performance, deadlines, and outcomes.
- Coordinate cross-functional teams for successful delivery.
Requirements
- 5+ years’ IT experience in cloud computing (VMs, containers, Kubernetes, serverless) across AWS, GCP, or OpenStack.
- Strong on-prem infrastructure knowledge.
- Linux expertise (RHEL preferred).
- Proven Agile/Scrum experience.
- Cloud certifications (e.g. Solutions Architect).
- Experience modernising applications (multi-region deployments).
- Familiarity with FinOps practices.
- Prior experience managing small technical teams.
- Strong English communication skills.
Desirable: ITSM tools (e.g. ServiceNow), TOGAF certification, open-source contributions, scientific/research background.

- Contract: 3 years (renewable up to 9 years)
- Salary: Starting from £4,206/month after tax (excl. pension & insurances), with additional allowances depending on family status.
- Hybrid working: 2 days on-site (Tue/Wed), 3 days remote.
