About the Role
EMBL-EBI is seeking a Full Stack Developer to join the MGnify team, supporting one of the world’s largest microbiome data resources.
MGnify manages:
- 2.5+ billion non-redundant protein sequences
- 700+ million predicted protein structures
- Rapidly expanding datasets powered by scalable AlphaFold predictions
This is an opportunity to design and implement scalable systems supporting global scientific research.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and optimise PostgreSQL/MySQL database architectures
- Manage ingestion and release of datasets into Google Cloud BigQuery
- Develop scalable web APIs and user interfaces
- Write robust, production-level Python code
- Process large datasets using tools such as Dask, Polars, or Pandas
- Troubleshoot technical issues and support users
- Collaborate via code reviews and agile methodologies
- Present technical updates internally and externally
Requirements
- Master’s degree in computational or related discipline (or equivalent experience)
- Strong Python development experience
- Extensive hands-on experience with relational databases
- Experience working with large-scale datasets
- Familiarity with revision control and agile practices
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
Desirable Skills
- Big Data handling experience
- REST API development
- Front-end development (Vue.js or React)
- GitHub or GitLab collaboration experience
