About the Role

EMBL-EBI is seeking a Full Stack Developer to join the MGnify team, supporting one of the world’s largest microbiome data resources.

MGnify manages:

  • 2.5+ billion non-redundant protein sequences
  • 700+ million predicted protein structures
  • Rapidly expanding datasets powered by scalable AlphaFold predictions

This is an opportunity to design and implement scalable systems supporting global scientific research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and optimise PostgreSQL/MySQL database architectures
  • Manage ingestion and release of datasets into Google Cloud BigQuery
  • Develop scalable web APIs and user interfaces
  • Write robust, production-level Python code
  • Process large datasets using tools such as Dask, Polars, or Pandas
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and support users
  • Collaborate via code reviews and agile methodologies
  • Present technical updates internally and externally

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in computational or related discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong Python development experience
  • Extensive hands-on experience with relational databases
  • Experience working with large-scale datasets
  • Familiarity with revision control and agile practices
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills

Desirable Skills

  • Big Data handling experience
  • REST API development
  • Front-end development (Vue.js or React)
  • GitHub or GitLab collaboration experience
