Job Description

We are seeking experienced Mental Health Support Workers (MHSWs) to join the Epsom & St Helier Staff Bank. You will play a key role in supporting patients with mental health conditions or psychological distress, providing compassionate, person-centred care during their most vulnerable moments.

You must have:

  • Minimum 1 year experience in a mental health setting
  • A valid Care Certificate
  • In-date Seni Lewis Law Compliant Restraint Training (proof required at application)

Main Duties

  • Therapeutically engage with patients and deliver care following principles of least restriction
  • Provide enhanced observation and support, risk assessments, and de-escalation techniques
  • Undertake delegated clinical care duties including clinical observations, vital signs, and fluid/dietary support
  • Deliver psychological interventions to reduce distress, agitation, and anxiety
  • Assist with patient movement, escort duties, and safety measures
  • Ensure effective communication with patients, carers, and the clinical team
  • Support assessment, discharge, and admission processes

Requirements

Essential:

  • Right to work in the UK (UK Passport or Share Code)
  • 12 months MHSW experience
  • Experience in patient care within mental health settings
  • Care Certificate
  • Restraint training (Seni Lewis Law compliant)

Desirable:

  • NVQ Level 3 in Healthcare
  • Knowledge of Mental Health / Mental Capacity Act
  • Experience in therapeutic de-escalation and psychology interventions

Skills & Attributes

  • Knowledge of mental health symptoms and risk factors
  • Ability to communicate effectively and empathetically
  • Experience with care planning and risk assessment
  • Commitment to NHS values: respect, kindness, professionalism, and teamwork
  • Physical ability to support patient care duties including manual handling
