About the Role
The European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead the operational delivery of the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database (AFDB) — one of the world’s largest openly accessible resources for protein structure predictions. This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of AI, biology, and open science, ensuring the continued evolution of a global research resource.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Oversight & Delivery
- Oversee AFDB’s operational planning, milestone tracking, and release coordination
- Manage backlog refinement and feature prioritisation
- Identify bottlenecks, optimise resource allocation, and drive accountability
Cross-Functional Team Coordination
- Coordinate developers, bioinformaticians, and UX specialists
- Collaborate with partners such as Google DeepMind and EMBL-EBI infrastructure teams
- Facilitate sprint planning, retrospectives, and regular team check-ins
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
- Act as the main point of contact for AFDB operations
- Gather and synthesise input from user surveys and helpdesk feedback
- Support communication and reporting to Google DeepMind
Monitoring, Reporting & Insights
- Oversee AFDB analytics and usage reporting
- Evaluate the scientific impact of new features and services
- Use data-driven insights to guide roadmap decisions
About You
Essential:
- Proven experience leading cross-functional technical or scientific teams
- Strong project management background (agile/hybrid)
- Excellent communication, planning, and stakeholder management skills
Desirable:
- Experience in biological data, research infrastructure, or open science
- Familiarity with tools such as Jira, GitHub, Looker, or Confluence
- Understanding of FAIR principles
Employment Details
- Contract: Project-based until September 2028
- Grade: 6 (dependent on qualifications)
- Salary: £3,695/month (after tax, excluding pension and insurance contributions)
- Work pattern: Hybrid (minimum 2 days on-site per week)
