Salary: £43,532 – £68,736 per annum, plus benefits and family allowances

Overview
EMBL-EBI is seeking a motivated Senior Scientific Developer / Cheminformatician to join our Chemical Biology Resources team. You’ll develop and maintain software and workflows for world-leading chemogenomics resources, including ChEMBL, SureChEMBL, UniChem, ChEBI, and OPSIN, supporting both academia and industry. You’ll collaborate with an international, interdisciplinary team to enhance scientific data workflows and ensure robust, automated data releases.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain scientific workflows and data pipelines (Python, Java)
- Support software tools for processing chemical and biological data
- Collaborate across ChEMBL, SureChEMBL, and ChEBI teams to resolve data quality issues
- Integrate external databases (BindingDB, PubChem) into ChEMBL workflows
- Document workflows, maintain databases, and support project meetings
- Contribute to training and scientific meetings
Requirements
- Masters or equivalent in Chemistry, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Data Science, or related field
- Experience in cheminformatics or life sciences data engineering
- Proficiency in Python and cheminformatics libraries (RDKit, Open Babel, InChI, SMILES/SMARTS)
- SQL database experience and familiarity with Linux, Git, GitHub/GitLab
- Strong communication, self-motivated, collaborative, and proactive
- Advanced English
Desirable
- Docker/containerization experience
- Basic Java knowledge
- Experience with AI/NLP/LLM for data processing
