Overview

This role is part of a new project between Diamond Light Source and Collaborative Computational Project Number 4 (CCP4). Diamond is the UK’s national synchrotron light source, enabling cutting-edge research in drug discovery, nanotechnology, and more. CCP4 is a world-leading software resource for macromolecular crystallography.

The project focuses on integrating PanDDA2 software, a breakthrough in crystallographic analysis, into CCP4’s cloud infrastructure with next-gen user interfaces and workflows for analysing large-scale structural datasets.

About the Role
As a Software Scientist / Senior Software Scientist, you will:

  • Lead integration of PanDDA2 into CCP4-cloud.
  • Develop intuitive UIs for large-scale dataset analysis (>10k structures).
  • Enhance XChem’s automated pipelines.
  • Collaborate with international scientists and developers.
  • Manage software workflows (version control, testing, documentation).
  • Contribute to funding proposals and collaborations.

This role offers a chance to contribute to global drug discovery and structural biology breakthroughs.

About You

Essential:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Structural Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or related.
  • Experience in backend software development & data management.
  • Knowledge/interest in computational drug discovery & crystallography.
  • Strong communication & collaboration skills.

Desirable:

  • Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, modern web frameworks.
  • Structural biology software knowledge.
  • UI/UX design experience.
  • High-performance computing & parallel processing.
  • Machine learning applications in biology.
  • Open-source/community software development.
  • Cloud platforms (Docker, Kubernetes).

At Senior Level additionally:

  • Proven leadership in software development or collaborations.
  • Published algorithms/software in structural biology.
  • Experience managing teams and securing research funding.
  • Translating research prototypes into production-ready systems.
