Description
We are seeking a Software Engineer with a strong background in software development and a passion for solving scientific challenges involving big data in biology. You will work on organising large datasets of proteins for thousands of organisms — a core component of our global bioinformatics resources.
Proteins are essential to life, and understanding their function helps us gain insights into health and disease. With biological data growing at unprecedented speed, scalable computational approaches are critical to managing protein sequences across organisms.
As part of the Protein Function development team, you will join an interdisciplinary group supporting the world-leading UniProt and Gene Ontology Annotation resources.
Responsibilities
• Design, develop, test, document, and maintain software for the proteomes production pipeline
• Assist with data analysis and processing algorithms
• Support and maintain production systems and service releases
• Collaborate with teams across EMBL-EBI and international partners
• Contribute to innovative programming and big data technologies
• Encourage and apply programming standards and best practices
You Have
• A degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Life Sciences, or a related field
• At least 3 years of software development experience using Java and Python
You May Also Have
• Understanding of statistics, graph theory, and probability
• Familiarity with CI tools (e.g., Jenkins), build tools (e.g., Maven), and Git
• Strong knowledge of OOP, IoC, clean code, automated testing, and code reviews
• Experience with SQL, relational databases, and Unix shell scripting
• Background in bioinformatics or biological resource development
