Overview
Do you want to build tools used by researchers worldwide to explore and understand genomic data? EMBL-EBI and the Ensembl Project are seeking a Web Developer to help deliver next-generation genome resources, including beta.ensembl.org.
The Ensembl Project provides open-access, high-quality genome data across a wide range of species. Our intuitive tools support exploration of genes, variants, epigenomes and comparative genomics—turning complex data into scientific discovery.
Technical Contributions
- Develop high-quality, tested and maintainable web-based solutions
- Build applications using TypeScript, React, and Rust
- Deliver data-rich visualisations for complex multidimensional datasets
Operational Excellence
- Adhere to coding standards and best practices
- Provide second- and third-line incident support
- Conduct root cause analysis and readiness reviews
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with design, UX and data teams
- Maintain documentation and SOPs
- Participate in agile ceremonies and organisational meetings
- Join the Ensembl site support rota
Leadership & Continuous Improvement
- Suggest and implement process improvements
- Contribute to ongoing development and release cycles
Typical Progression Timeline
- Month 1: Submit and review PRs, attend team meetings
- Month 3: Understand core architecture, contribute to releases and improvements
- Month 6: Lead key project contributions and present to wider teams
Essential Requirements
- BSc (or higher) in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Professional experience developing web applications
- Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript
- Experience with React or similar frameworks
- Familiarity with CI/CD, containerisation, testing, and source control
- Experience with WASM (ideally using Rust)
- Experience with web graphics (Canvas, SVG, WebGL, D3.js, three.js)
- Linux experience
- Proficiency with GitHub, Jira and Confluence
- Excellent written and spoken English (C1 minimum)
Desirable Skills
- Agile development experience
- Background in genomics or life sciences
- Data visualisation experience
- Large dataset handling
- API technologies (REST, GraphQL, gRPC)
- Python, Perl, MySQL, MongoDB experience
